Wine in the Streets: Mendoza´s Megadegustación

In celebration of Vendimia and for the sixth consecutive year, the Megadegustación uncorked hundreds of bottles, filled thousands of glasses, and threw a wine-centric party on a 2-block swatch of downtown Mendoza.  The block party style wine tasting took place from February 27 – March 4 along Sarmiento Street, a popular tourist destination for travelers seeking meat and souvenirs.

More than 250 wines were present from some of the prominent wineries in Mendoza Province and for less than 100 pesos guests enjoyed up to 6 glasses of wine and walked home with a free wine glass.  With only 6 tickets in hand and over 200 wines to choose from, multiple laps around the venue became a necessity.  In between laps, visitors took breaks at the outdoor sofas to enjoy the live music concert at the epicenter of celebration.

Local DJs and bands rotated on and off the stage, entertaining the masses as they waited in line for just another glass of something delicious and everything from traditional tunes to modern rhythms spilled into the streets.

As the night grew ever darker and the 1 AM closing time inched closer, the wine enthusiasts – who had zigged and zagged the streets just hours before – began to move with a little less haste.  Even for the crowd of native wine drinkers, 5 or 6 glasses into the night meant that forward motion became a series of languid steps and unstable footfalls.

Though this style of wine tasting requires a certain, adjustment of expectations.  And though it´s certainly not suited to every wine drinker´s tastes – as we tend to be a rather high maintenance group – it does hit the spot for tourists looking to celebrate vino without the usual pomp and circumstance.
