Mendoza´s Artisan Fair

There is something ever so slightly entrancing about South American plazas.  They are the gathering places and green spaces that can be found in South American towns of all sizes – from the small to spralling.

Fast-paced footfalls cross the plazas in the early morning, as people rush to offices and embark on their lists of to-dos.  By mid-afternoon, smaller feet zig and zag across plaza playgrounds.  Parents watch their children swing, slide, jump and run.  Young students meet up to grab a snack or to catch up on the latest news.  Young couples rondevoux to embrace, and steal uncensored kisses.  And then, as the sun dips down toward the horizon, the scuffling paws of street dogs pace the plazas, as they search out abandoned scraps of food.

And in Mendoza´s primary plaza, Plaza Independencia, located at the epicenter of downtown, a multitude of artisans unpack their wares and set up shop.  Though the artisan stands are ever-present in the plaza, the fair is in full swing from Friday -Sunday after 7 PM.

More than a gathering space, more than a picnic point, Plaza Independencia converts into a colorful open-air gallery for local artisans to who and sell their creations.  The wares are varied, the prices just right, and a stroll through the stands makes for a wonderful cultural dessert at the end of any day.

Know before you go:

As with all urban spaces, keep an eye on your belongings.  Artisan stands almost exclusively accept cash (pesos) as the form of payment, and small bills are always much appreciated.  Prices are fixed and bartering goes slightly against the custom.  If you´re really hungry for a deal however, you can always propose a slight discount when purchasing more than one item.
