Finding Your 4th of July Wine

Fourth of july wine pairings

Sparks will fly this Fourth of July, as the USA celebrates its 239th Independence Day and preparation for this year’s three-day holiday weekend is likely to include a special supply run to your local wine shop.  After all, what would Independence Day be like without a salute to the reds, the whites, and the rosés!

When selecting your 4th of July wines, keep in mind that now is not the time to dust off your finest vintage, simply hunt for something delicious that can still be enjoyed in a plastic cup (heaven forbid it should come to that).  As you trot off to the supermarket with your list in hand, keep in mind that wine pairings can be based on many things – seasonality, regional traditions, menus, and even setting.  When it comes to finding the perfect wine to uncork this 4th, be sure to keep an open mind to all the wine pairing possibilities:

Seasonal wine pairings

If you’re seeking respite from a sweltering summer day, nothing is more likely to cool you down than a chilled bottle of white wine or a citric bubbly.  Lighter fare with fresh fruits and veggies invites a wine that will not overpower the subtle nuances and clean flavors of the season’s produce.

Uncork a bottle of Torrontés grown in Mendoza or the high altitude Salta province.  Torrontés offers intoxicating aromatics filled with citric notes and floral sweetness, though on the palate it is dry, crisp and delicious.

There seems to be an inherent, organic synergy between culinary traditions of certain regions and the grapes that are grown there.  For example, grilled meats in Spain are paired with the dry red of Rioja and in Argentina the slow cooked Asado is paired with fruit forward reds bolstered by firm tannins.

Young Malbec that retains powerful aromas of red fruit and violet notes, with a soft texture complete with integrated tannins and bright acidity is nothing less than an asado’s soul mate.

Menu-based wine pairings

Hot dogs, barbequed meat, fruit salad, and coleslaw are standard fare on Independence Day.  Yet, rather than deduce the perfect wine pairing, many BBQ masters opt for a chilled can of something carbonated – but this year, elevate your meal and put the beer and coke away back in the Coleman cooler.

Cabernet and Merlot that offer lush black fruit and a hint of smokiness are excellent accompaniments to grilled steak and burgers.

Setting-based wine pairings

Afternoon parades, evening firework shows and picnics in the park are easy-going settings that invite easy drinking wines.  Whether you’ll be sprawled out in the dappled sunlight or snuggled under a blanket watching the fireworks as your dog burrows under the house in fright – there’s a wine to that can perfectly suit the moment.   Keep in mind that where friends and family abound, so should an ample selection of wines and wine styles, particularly if you’re weaning your loved ones away from soda pop and beer.

To mix up your wine menu, consider adding a 100% Malbec rosé such as Rosa, produced by Belasco de Baquedano.  This rosé is a bright red ruby color and exhibits strong flavors of cherries, ripe raspberries and strawberries, each leading up to a crisp and elegant finish.
