Federal Vendimia in Mendoza

Federal Vendimia Week is what can most accurately be described as the warm up to Mendoza´s grape harvest main event.  Held from February 22-28, Vendimia Federal is a favorite among Mendoza locals, and an experience that is slowly catching on among international travelers.

It doesn´t come with all the flashy lights and polished preparation of the Acto Central show held this upcoming weekend, but it does spotlight the culture of the region that plays host to one of the world´s most renowned harvest festivals.

Organized by Mendoza´s Ministry of Culture, Federal Vendimia calls upon the Mendoza Province´s 18 districts to showcase the best of their best.  Throughout the seven days of festivities the districts present live music performances, traditional foods, handmade artisan creations, and folklore dancers.

Though the 18 districts together form one unified Mendoza cultural footprint, they also each contribute distinct differences.  Those differences were celebrated by cultural stands constructed by each district which featured the district´s name, Vendimia Queen Candidate, as well as local products and landscapes.

More than 50 thousand participants flocked to San Martin Park to participate in the festival and to enjoy the cultural mosaic of a province rich in tradition.  Visitors formed long lines in front of the food booths, breathing in the sweet and salty Asado aromas ever-present at Argentine gatherings.  They shopped the plethora of artisan stands, admiring the handiwork of local artists: leather belts and purses, custom-made knives, jewelry, mate gourds, lamp shades and everything in between.

Though the festival has ended and the Asado smoke has surely wafted away, snapshots of the experience remain.  Alone they serve as a cultural vignette, but piece them together and Mendoza becomes something far richer – far more stunning – than merely the sum of its 18 parts.
