Buenos Aires: The Other Side of Argentine Culture

Travelers making their way to Argentina have the difficult decision of choosing their entry point – do you opt for the Santiago layover, and simply hop over the Andes to land in Mendoza’s regional airport?  Or should you brave the expansive terminals at Ezeiza airport, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires?

Directly across from each other, on opposite sides of the country’s borders, Mendoza and Buenos Aires represent two very distinct tastes of Argentine culture.

Mendoza city has a population of around 150,000 while Buenos Aires tips the scales at nearly 3 million.  Mendoza is the country’s most prominent wine region, Buenos Aires is an internationally recognized hub of fashion, night life, and a mixed cocktail of different cultures.  In simple terms, Buenos Aires is the Ying to Mendoza’s Yang.  It is the hustle and bustle to Mendoza’s daily sacred siesta.  It is the anonymity & fierce ambition, to Mendoza’s small town feel.

Buenos Aires is a vivacious blend of European and South American cultures, a fact made present by the pulsating beat of tango music and Spanish guitar that fills the cobblestone streets and reverberates off the French inspired architecture of sky-hill offices and apartment buildings.  It’s numerous neighborhoods – La Boca, Puerto Madero, San Telmo, Palermo etc. – make for rich stomping ground for tourists bent on exploring, shopping, watching tango, and eating at remarkable restaurants.  The streets are filled, round-the-clock, with the footfalls of commuters, the screech of city buses, and general hum of 3 million people going about their lives.

However, even in Buenos Aires there is room for green space.  The city’s handful of parks, plazas, shoreline retreats, and wild life reserves are common gathering places for urban dwellers eager to unplug from the concrete and cityscapes.

Travelers that set foot on the desert soils of Mendoza and the concrete pavement of Buenos Aires, often lose themselves in a sea of comparisons – after all, it’s difficult to imagine how two hubs of Argentine culture can have seemingly so very few things in common.

That is, until it’s time to open up a bottle of wine.

Anuva Wines, is a Buenos Aires wine tasting bar that is dedicated to bringing together some of the best small production wines in Argentina and sharing them with the world.  Anuva also offers wine shipping services and a wine club, to help travelers transport their good taste, delicious wine, and wonderful memories back home.

The company was started in 2007 by an American and Argentinean who fell in love with one another in Buenos Aires and then fell in love with the wines of Mendoza.

Whether you’re on your way to Mendoza and want to prepare your palate for the real-deal, or you’re heading home and want to get in a few more sips before boarding the plane, Anuva’s wine tasting offers a chance to get a taste of Mendoza in the midst of Buenos Aires fervor.

Many of the wines featured in the Anuva wine tastings come from family-owned, boutique wineries in the wine making regions of Mendoza such as Lujan De Cuyo and Maipu.

Whether you make the trip by bus (a 14-hour trek, with comfy seats and free wine) or by plane, it’s well worth the trip to live Argentina’s culture on both sides of the coin.
